Idris, a prominent figure during the New Order regime, was known for his bravery and patriotism. He was a close friend of Prabowo’s uncle, who died in battle. Idris was a key figure who supported President Suharto in the early years of his administration. He was the first TNI battalion to enter the capital after Indonesia gained sovereignty from the Dutch. Despite his outspoken nature and criticism of corruption, Idris was respected for his bravery and leadership capabilities.
Prabowo recalls Idris as a mentor who shared wisdom and advice with him. Before passing away, Idris told Prabowo to “keep on fighting” and to take care of the Republic. Prabowo remembers this emotional moment as a pivotal lesson in leadership.
Another exemplary leader mentioned by Prabowo is Lieutenant General TNI (Ret.) Hartono Rekso Dharsono, known as Pak Ton. Pak Ton was a powerful confidant of President Suharto during the New Order era. He was popular among the people, students, and soldiers for his criticism of authoritarianism and support for democratization.
Pak Ton had a distinguished career in the TNI, serving as the Commander of Kodam Siliwangi and playing a crucial role in suppressing rebellions. Despite facing accusations and brief imprisonment for supporting acts of terror, Pak Ton remained a respected and influential figure in the military.
Prabowo recalls visiting Pak Ton while he was in prison, showing support and solidarity. He also remembers a time when he selected a young furniture company, founded by ITB students, as a subcontractor for a project, despite facing criticism from a superior officer.
Both Kemal Idris and Hartono Rekso Dharsono left a lasting impact on Prabowo, teaching him valuable lessons in leadership, bravery, and integrity. Their examples serve as inspiration for aspiring military leaders in Indonesia.
