Lieutenant General TNI (Ret.) Himawan Soetanto exemplifies the value of a commander being close to his men. He believed that a commander should be with his men from morning until night, checking on their well-being, even down to the quality of their underwear. Himawan Soetanto’s leadership style emphasized the importance of being present and attentive to the needs of his men.

I first encountered Himawan Soetanto when I joined AKABRI in 1970, where he served as the Deputy Governor in charge of education and training. He was well-educated and well-read, often discussing books with me. His neat appearance, constant smile, and calm confidence left a lasting impression. Himawan Soetanto’s extensive combat experience shaped his leadership style, emphasizing the importance of being present with his troops.

Lieutenant General Sarwo Edhie Wibowo was another exemplary leader, known for his charisma and hands-on approach to leadership. As the commander of the Special Forces Unit (RPKAD), Sarwo Edhie led by example and instilled in his cadets the spirit of patriotism and perseverance. His dedication to the country and its legacy inspired many, including myself, as a young cadet.

My interactions with Sarwo Edhie began during my time as a cadet, where he shared his experiences and values with us. He emphasized the importance of persistence and patriotism, values that were deeply ingrained in us as AKABRI cadets. Sarwo Edhie’s commitment to the country and its history left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Lastly, Grand General TNI (Ret.) Abdul Haris Nasution, a key figure in Indonesia’s struggle for independence, provided me with invaluable insights into history and warfare strategies. His expertise and knowledge, along with his experiences fighting against the Dutch, enriched my understanding of our nation’s history. Nasution’s willingness to share his wisdom and experiences made me feel like a student of a historical giant.

In conclusion, the exemplary leadership of Himawan Soetanto, Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, and Abdul Haris Nasution has had a profound impact on my own leadership style and values. Their commitment to their troops, dedication to the country, and wealth of knowledge have left a lasting impression on me, shaping me into the leader I am today.
