The 2024 Paris Paralympics, set to begin on August 28, 2024, will highlight the hard work and determination of Indonesian Paralympians. As preparations progress, one crucial aspect being finalized is the design of the costumes for the Indonesian contingent. Didit Hediprasetyo designed the costumes for the 2024 Paris Olympics, but this time, the responsibility has been entrusted to Didiet Maulana and his brand, IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana. The costumes draw inspiration from the concept of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity), which is a strong foundation for the designs. In collaboration with Mills, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora), and the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPC), Didiet Maulana has created a collection that includes jackets, jerseys, and track pants. The design not only focuses on aesthetics but also embodies the values of unity and diversity that are fundamental to the Indonesian nation.
The “Sandya Niskala” design series incorporates traditional ikat weaving, representing the rich and diverse Indonesian culture. The design features geometric patterns inspired by dynamic ocean waves, reflecting Indonesia’s identity as an archipelagic nation. The motifs symbolize the athletes’ struggle and optimism in competition and draw inspiration from the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia. The feather motif symbolizes strength, unity, and solidarity, with the placement carefully arranged to create a dynamic effect reminiscent of the Garuda Pancasila’s beak.
The colors chosen for the costumes carry deep meanings, inspired by the Garuda Pancasila. Red symbolizes courage, white symbolizes purity, gold symbolizes grandeur and glory, and touches of gray symbolize responsibility. Through these colors, IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana aims to bring an energetic vibe and good hopes for the Indonesian athletes competing in the Paralympics.
To celebrate the launch of the collection, Didiet Maulana and his team held a photo session with Indonesian Paralympians participating in the 2024 Paris Paralympics. The session was themed “Embrace and Celebrating Our Athlete,” aiming to celebrate the spirit and dedication of the athletes representing Indonesia. Didiet hopes that the “Sandya Niskala” collection will not only symbolize unity and diversity but also inspire and empower the athletes as they compete.
Both Didiet Maulana and Didit Hediprasetyo have played significant roles in designing costumes that are not only functional but also rich in meaning, carrying messages of pride and unity for Indonesia on the international stage.
