Prabowo Subianto’s 3-Day Working Visit to 5 Nations, Meeting with Regional Leaders

Prabowo Subianto, Indonesian Defense Minister and President-elect, recently embarked on a rapid tour of five Southeast Asian countries within a span of three days. The purpose of the visit was to meet with national leaders in order to strengthen bilateral relations and engage in discussions on strategic issues.

The tour began in Brunei Darussalam, where Prabowo met with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at Istana Nurul Iman on Thursday, September 5. The discussions centered around defense cooperation and education, with Prabowo extending an invitation to Bruneian military officers to enroll in master’s programs at the Republic of Indonesia Defence University (RIDU).

Following his visit to Brunei, Prabowo traveled to Laos where he met with President Thongloun Sisoulith and Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on Friday, September 6. The discussions in Laos focused on mutual benefits in defense and regional stability within ASEAN.

Next, Prabowo journeyed to Cambodia, where he met with Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet. The emphasis was on exploring new opportunities for collaboration to strengthen defense partnerships.

His visit to Thailand saw him attending a dinner in Bangkok hosted by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and his daughter, newly elected Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Prabowo expressed his gratitude for the friendship between their families.

The final leg of the tour took Prabowo to Malaysia, where he met with Sultan Ibrahim at the Istana Negara to discuss defense cooperation and other strategic matters. He also had a meeting with his close friend, Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, to discuss bilateral defense cooperation and regional relations.

After the completion of his visits to all five Southeast Asian countries, Prabowo returned to Indonesia on Saturday evening, reaffirming the commitment of Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense to enhancing bilateral defense relationships.
