The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum. This proposal has been formally submitted to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen). The main objective of this initiative is to cultivate a generation of healthy, intelligent, and globally competitive Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured and integrated nutrition education within schools is crucial for developing a comprehensive understanding of nutrition from a young age.
Nutrition is not only about food, but also about shaping the future. A child who grasps nutrition concepts will grow up to be healthy, think critically, and make meaningful contributions to the nation. Schools are seen as ideal platforms for educating students about nutrition, allowing them to comprehend the relationships between diet, health, and overall well-being, while encouraging them to make healthier lifestyle choices.
The proposed curriculum aims to introduce students to various important topics such as basic nutritional principles, food group categorization, nutrient functions in the body, and the negative effects of unhealthy eating habits. Additionally, nutrition education will boost students’ awareness of the importance of a balanced diet, empowering them to make informed dietary choices and preventing diet-related diseases like obesity and diabetes. Practical skills like cooking and gardening will also be incorporated to provide students with hands-on experience that can be applied in their daily lives.
The integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum is expected to create a unified approach involving schools, families, and communities to promote balanced nutrition throughout society. This initiative is crucial for equipping students with the knowledge and abilities needed to lead healthy lives, support disease prevention efforts, and enhance overall quality of life in the future. BGN, as the agency responsible for executing national nutrition programs, has implemented various educational initiatives, including using social media platforms like YouTube for podcasts and promotional videos related to the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program.
BGN is calling on all stakeholders including government bodies, schools, parents, media, and the broader public to endorse the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum as part of the national movement towards achieving Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 vision. Ikeu emphasized that the Free Nutritious Meals Program will only reach its full potential when complemented by comprehensive nutrition education that resonates throughout all levels of society.
