Presiden Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs—Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes)—are being hailed as key initiatives that serve as “express lanes” in the push to accelerate poverty eradication. These programs have the potential to not only provide significant job opportunities but also enhance economic independence among individuals.
Budiman Sudjatmiko, the Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), emphasized that the aim of these programs goes beyond just alleviating poverty. The goal is to empower individuals and enable them to be economically self-sufficient. Drawing a comparison to football, he described the government’s role as ensuring that individuals, like players, are well-equipped, nourished, and have access to economic opportunities to score the “goal” of eradicating poverty.
The People’s School program focuses on breaking the cycle of poverty through boarding schools, while initiatives like MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih aim to bring economic benefits to entire communities. By establishing kitchens and retail outlets, these programs are projected to create millions of jobs, benefitting not only the immediate workforce but also upstream sectors such as farmers and small businesses.
Nanik S. Deyang, Deputy Head of BP Taskin, highlighted that these programs provide tangible hope for poor households to achieve independence. By removing children from limiting environments and creating economic opportunities for local producers, initiatives like MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih are fostering economic growth and resilience within communities. Kopdes, in particular, is streamlining supply chains, reducing costs, and providing access to affordable credit, thus empowering individuals to break free from exploitative lending practices.
Overall, the collaborative efforts of these programs are seen as instrumental in driving economic empowerment, job creation, and poverty alleviation among communities. Through a holistic approach that prioritizes education, nutrition, and economic opportunities, President Prabowo’s initiatives are paving the way towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for all.
